What is the 16-25 Railcard?

If you’re aged between 16 and 25, you could be saving money on a huge range of train tickets. The 16-25 Railcard (also known as the Student Railcard, or Young Persons Railcard) gives discounts of 1/3 on the price of most tickets. So, whether you’re going home to visit Mum, commuting to work or enjoying a day out with friends, you’ll be saving money on your journey.


And it’s not just train journeys you can save on. Once you have a railcard, you can access great deals and discounts, from exciting experiences to gym memberships and dinner deals. What are you waiting for? Read on for more information about the 16-25 Railcard.

Who is it for?

  • Anyone aged 16 to 25
  • Students in full-time education aged 26 or older

16-25 Railcard price?

  • £30 for one year
  • £70 for three years

What do I need to apply for a 16-25 Railcard?

If you buy the 16-25 Railcard online, the only things you need are:

  • A valid passport or UK driving licence to verify your identity
  • A digital passport-style photo saved to your computer, tablet or mobile phone
  • A debit or credit card

 

 

You can buy a 16-25 Railcard at any staffed station ticket office or National Rail-licensed Travel Agent. The main advantage of this is that you can do it on the day you are travelling.
If you're applying at a station for the first time you'll need to complete an application form (you can pick this up at the station) and bring either of the following:

    • Your birth certificate
    • Passport (all nationalities accepted)
    • UK driving licence
    • National identity card
    • A passport-size photo
    • Proof of eligibility if applying as a mature student

What happens next?

If you buy a digital Railcard, you'll be sent a code and once you download the Railcard app and upload the card onto your phone, you can start using it straight away.

If not they aim to dispatch your Railcard within one working day of you ordering it, but, it’s probably best to allow up to five working days for your Railcard to arrive. It’ll be sent out free of charge by First Class post, but if you prefer, you have the option to pay for Special Delivery.
