If Your Mum Likes Adventure...
…a trip to Edinburgh to climb Arthur’s Seat is a wonderful Mother’s Day gift. You can’t get much more adventurous than climbing an extinct volcano, so pack your walking boots, layer up and jump on a train to Scotland!
Arthur’s Seat is the highest point of a volcano which last erupted 350 million years ago, boasting 360° views of beautiful Edinburgh below.
The climb starts from Holyrood Park just outside the city centre and is a short hike to the highest point, although you might arrive out of breath. See if you can spot Edinburgh Castle which sits on the remains of another extinct volcano one mile away.
It’s often very windy at the top but if you layer up, you can enjoy a picnic at the summit! Alternatively, Edinburgh is full of swanky restaurants, cute tea rooms and trendy bars and pubs to grab something to eat when you’re back down.

If Your Mum Likes Culture...
… a trip to Durham is sure to excite. Often overshadowed by its fun-loving neighbour, Newcastle, Durham is a fantastic place for a stimulating and culture-filled day out.
Durham Castle and Durham Cathedral were both awarded the status of a World Heritage Site in 1986 providing international recognition for this unique, historic and scenic site. Standing side by side overlooking the cobbled streets of medieval Durham and surrounded by the River Wear, the duo boasts magnificent architecture and stunning views. Spend time walking the cathedral grounds and appreciating the stunning surroundings. If you and your Mum are Harry Potter fans, you may recognise some parts of the Cathedral from the films!
Durham Castle is now part of Durham University and visits to the Castle are by guided tours only. Take your Mum back in time as you are told about the history of this ancient building and learn about what it’s like to live there today.
Impressive buildings are not all there is to see in Durham. Home to insightful museums, entertaining theatres and blossoming nature, as well as an array of cafes, shops and galleries; your culture loving Mum will be entertained for the entire day, or longer if you wish.
